Aren’t We One?
Aren’t We One?
This morning, while on my walk, I listened to Aren’t We One, the newest song by My Morning Jacket. It reminded me of my son Seth—his love for music, his passion for storytelling, and our many car rides together talking about life. Seth was a powerful musician himself, and he would often share with me the brilliance behind the music and lyrics of bands like My Morning Jacket.
Sadly, last April, I lost Seth to his battle with alcohol addiction. He was a beautiful soul, and the grief of losing him is something I carry every day. But today, as I listened to that song, I felt compelled to share something deeper.
Our nation is hurting right now. We are divided—by politics, by opinions on the economy, on border protection, and so many other things. The hate and vitriol around us are palpable. But as I reflect on Seth’s life and the way music brought us together, I’m reminded that despite all our differences, we are, at our core, one. We are all human, each of us with our own struggles, joys, and stories.
My son Seth believed in the power of connection, and I want to honor his memory by asking all of us to find a way to bridge the divide. Whether it's through music, conversation, or simply listening to one another, I believe we can bring more compassion and understanding into the world.
